Becoming A Criminal Lawyer In Ontario
In order to become a criminal lawyer Toronto an individual must be called to the bar of Ontario. The first step to doing this is to attain a law degree. Most people who practice as a Toronto Criminal Lawyer, such as Adam Goodman of Adam's Law Blog will have earned their law degree at a law school in Ontario or elsewhere in Canada. Some may also earn their law degree in the United States at another foreign school. It can be more difficult to be called to the bar of Ontario if one's law degree is earned outside Canada.
In order to be accepted to law school an applicant must have completed some undergraduate education. There are some exceptions for students from Quebec that is beyond the scope of this article. It is becoming common for most law students to have degrees before applying. Law schools will consider factors such as grades and extracurricular activities to determine admission.The school will look at how one did on the LSAT (Law School Admission Test).
In law school a potential criminal lawyer should try and take criminal law courses beyond the mandatory course in first year. After law school the student must article for a ten-month period. This involves working for a lawyer or clerking for a Judge. Before or during articles the student must pass examinations called bar exams. There are also other requirements such as completing a course on ethics.
Once all of these prerequisites are complete a student will be called to the bar. They are then free to practice criminal law however they should ensure they have proper mentorship from more experienced lawyers before engaging in practice. The criminal bar is quite cordial and more senior lawyers are often quite willing to help their junior colleagues as they begin their careers.
