College, Interrupted

The idea of college and its value in life and the market place has come under great fire in the last few years. Many people struggle with what degree they should get and it is made all the more problematic by the issues of student debt and rising costs. In fact, many students are passing on traditional four year school and going to military universities, technical schools and two year colleges.

In particular the state of Texas has launched a new initiative to encourage students to reconsider the value of a bachelor of arts degree over a technical degree or even associates degree. With so many focusing on Ph.D’s and liberal arts, they are worried that they will see a decline in skilled labor. The very idea of liberal arts as preperation for life has come under fire as well. “It’s not that we don’t need engineers and Ph.D.’s and research scientists,” said Joe Arnold, a government affairs manager with B.A.S.F., a chemical company. “We do, but that’s not all we need. We need skilled craftsmen. We need operators.”

The new program will work closely with actual jobs and industries to place students directly in classes they will benefit from the most. They can gain real world experience and learn needed skills by working closely with these industries.  They market needs skilled and educated craftsmen, machinest, and operators. Part of the problem is that many people still place higher value on a four year degree, even if it isn’t as obviously beneficial upon graduation. Mike Reeser, the Texas State Technical College System Chancellor explains, that we have, as he calls it “a misperception in the country that the worst bachelor’s degree is more valuable than the best associate’s degree. “

It’s just not the case. America has seem to forgotten that many people have a different set of talents or skill set.  The last few decades have seen a decrease in manufactoring skills and more on academics. It seems like such jobs are less prestigious even though they should not be.

However, the program has rung a bell with many younger students who find themselves out of place in modern academics. Most wonder why they even need many costly classes on subjects that won't really help them out. They see little real world application to what they are studying and want more. At
